Paneled Grape, #1881, from Westmoreland Glass

February 21, 2023 by Kathy Leave a Comment

Westmoreland Glass made Paneled Grape from 1950 to their closing almost exclusively in nearly opaque white milk glass. It was popular throughout its manufacturing life span, especially during the years when milk glass was particularly in style.

Pieces have molded grapes and grape leaves and most have obvious panels as with this pitcher.

We only ever had three pieces, all sold long ago, the 32 ounce pitcher shown above, a footed creamer and a vase. Although Westmoreland made a dinner service, with sufficient plates and bowls, cup and saucer, even goblets and tumblers, Paneled Grape is mostly an accessory/decorative pattern. There are dozens of bowls, some with stems, some with underplates, or crimped edges, oval or round. Look for baskets, vases, egg plates, epergne sets, candle holders, candle holders, puff boxes, jardinieres, trays, tidbits, even a soap dish.

Replacements shows an 8 inch bowl that you could use as a serving dish. Its cupped shape and scalloped rim makes it decorative too.

You can choose between plates with scalloped rims or with beaded edges on an otherwise smooth rim. The panels on some pieces are less noticeable than on others.

Westmoreland made another milk glass pattern, Beaded Edge, that has the same little beads around the rim as do some Paneled Grape pieces. Beaded Edge is a plain, smooth glass with no molded motif and has far fewer pieces. You will see it often with decorations such as painted fruit. For comparison, this goblet is Beaded Edge, note the beads around around the midriff to make it usable for drinking. There is no molded grape design. (You may find Beaded Edge pieces with painted grapes, they are still Beaded Edge, not Paneled Grape.)

Many of the tumblers and vases look rather sturdy, upright, as with this next vase. However Westmoreland made many vases with crimped or flared shapes or swung vases.

You can choose among three creamer and sugar sets. This next one holds about 6 ounces and is just under 5 inches tall, quite a substantial creamer.

If you enjoy milk glass, especially patterns with many, varied decorative pieces such as bowls, baskets, planters, or useful pieces like butter dishes, cake plates and soap dishes, check out Paneled Grape.
