Gorgeous Colors of Mayfair Open Rose Depression Glass from Hocking

March 19, 2024 by Kathy Leave a Comment

If you shop antique malls or estate sales you’ll certainly come across pink Mayfair depression glass from Hocking. Since Hocking made this pattern for over 6 years, it was popular in the 1930s and it is still popular today, and best of all, there are many pieces to find.

Hocking’s pink is soft and clear, a lovely color that blends well with others.

The pattern has a smooth panel with raised rose blossoms surrounded by soft vertical ribs. It is extremely pretty! Most pieces are square-ish, others, such as the deep bowl above, are scalloped, and many have impressed rays in the base.

This table set with pink Mayfair shows the plate shapes and the pattern – so pretty! I paired it with Sharon pink cups and saucers, they play well together.

Hocking made Mayfair in green, a gorgeous blue and some yellow and crystal. They used a lighter, more yellowish hue for Mayfair (and for Miss America made contemporarily). I only had one green, piece, the center handled server.

I saw almost no green Mayfair when we shopped for glass, even the glass shows had little of it. Just to show you how well the green looks with other depression glass, here is a table where I added the green server to enliven the pink pieces. the table has a springtime look with crystal stemware, yellow Cameo and pink Miss America.

From what I see in my depression glass book, Collector’s Encyclopedia of Depression Glass by Gene and Cathy Florence, although Hocking made many pieces in green, most of those pieces are scarce with only a couple large bowls, the cake plate and the handled server easy to find. That’s too bad because these are lovely.

Hocking used an extraordinarily lovely shade of blue for Mayfair. Sad to say, there is not a lot of this on the open market and if you like this your best bet is likely a glass show. The photos I have of blue Mayfair are all from depression glass shows.

In this next picture from the Dearborn Michigan 2017 Depression Glass Show that has goblets, a sherbet, covered bowl and candy jar. Notice the pink and blue stems, at least 3 sizes.

Unfortunately I have no photos of yellow Mayfair.

If you like the Mayfair pattern then the pink is by far the easiest to find and the blue and green are less available and more costly but lovely. Select which you like and enjoy!
