Elegance on the Table – Fostoria Etched Crystal Tablescape Thursday

July 6, 2011 by Kathy 6 Comments

Last week I told you about our sun room adventure. Everything in the sun room is still in the dining room and will be there for yet another week! The carpet guys can’t come until the 15th, another nine days of mess. Luckily it’s summer and we’re eating on the deck.

Let’s look at a couple former tablescapes that feature Fostoria glass. Fostoria was one of the biggest names in quality American glassware and remained in business long after Heisey, Cambridge and Morgantown went out of business. Fostoria made lovely etched patterns when those were in style then switched to the simpler designs popular in the 1970s.

First one up is a table full of Meadow Rose etched crystal.  The lunch plates are etched around the rims with plain centers.  I love how the Oneida silver plate and the embroidered cloth have the same arched flower sprays as the Meadow Rose etch.

Here’s a close up for you.  We got the silver plate with Betty Crocker coupons and I don’t remember the pattern name.  This was our good silverware until my Mom left me her Rose Point.

This next one is Fostoria Chintz crystal.  Fostoria made Chintz about the same time as Meadow Rose.  Can you see the similarities?  The stemware has a different shape but the plates and accessory pieces are the same; only the etch is different.

Both Fostoria patterns use the Baroque shapes for plates.  Baroque has molded fleur de lis on the underside and lightly scalloped rims.  It’s pretty all by itself and is stunning with one of these etched patterns.

Did you notice one big difference in the plates?  Chintz is better if you plan to use your plates with forks or knives.  The rose pattern is in the center and on the rims.  When your eye sees the designed center you tend to not notice small wear marks as well, while plain centers will show every scratch.  I like both patterns a lot but if I wanted a set to use without worry I’d pick Fostoria Chintz just because the pattern hides the wear.

I hope you enjoyed seeing these two patterns.  Wish me luck on the sun room make over!

My thanks to Susan from Between Naps on the Porch for hosting this fun event.
