Capri 1960s Glass from Hazel Atlas – Dinnerware

July 25, 2022 by Kathy Leave a Comment

Capri is a catch-all term we collectors use for several patterns that Hazel Atlas made in their lovely, distinctive blue glass during the 1960s. You can read about the various patterns here. Capri is fairly substantial glass, thicker than many depression patterns, and it’s pretty sturdy. You could use the dinnerware pieces for your family meals or save it for special times.

Not all the patterns come in dinnerware as some are mostly tumblers or goblets and others mostly accessory pieces. If you want to use Capri for meals then look for the Hobnail design shown above or Octagonal or Colony square shown below in a salad bowl.

If you want a dinner set then look for Hobnail or Octagonal as they are the only designs that include dinner plates (to the best of my knowledge). Colony Square has the most bowls, ranging from a small, deep bowl to a large serving that is perfect for tossed salad. Hobnail and Dots each include a small bowl for a side salad and Daisy and Seashell/Swirl both have one small and one serving bowl.

I believe all the designs have a cup, but not necessarily a saucer, except Colony square.

Hobnail and Swirl have creamers and sugars but not the other designs.

You could choose to mix all the shapes and let the lovely electric blue color tie your table together, but if you prefer, Colony square blends well with Octagonal or pair Dots with Hobnail. These pairings combine similar designs – angular vs. round – and look particularly attractive together.

You also have an excellent choice of tumblers or small goblets. The Dots pattern (also called Skol) includes multiple tumblers which are extremely appealing. You can find tumblers and sherbets in Capri with 5-sided bottoms, called Gothic, and a few Swirl tumblers too.

Please be aware that not everyone refers to the Capri patterns by the same names. I’ve seen Swirl called Seashell and sometimes the Colony shapes are referred to as Colonial. If you enjoy this fun pattern and are buying online it’s wise to check photos and descriptions carefully so you know what you are getting.

Capri is a fun pattern you can use for your table settings and has several interesting shapes, all united under the gorgeous Capri blue color.
