Aurora Depression Glass from Hazel Atlas

Overview

Hazel Atlas made their charming pattern, Aurora, during the late 1930s mostly in blue with some pink, crystal and green.  Personally I have never seen any color but blue but my favorite reference book by Gene Florence says all pieces came in pink and several in green.

Aurora is a small pattern meant for a snack or dessert with no plate larger than 6 1/2 inches.  Look for two bowls, a nice 5 3/8 inch bowl for cereal and a deeper, narrower bowl, plus the cup, saucer, tumbler and creamer.  There is no sugar bowl to go with that creamer!

The most costly pieces are the small bowl, tumbler and creamer but overall Aurora is one of the least costly blue depression glass patterns and you can combine it nicely with Hazel Atlas’s larger Moderntone pattern.  This photo shows how well the two patterns work together.  The tumbler is Aurora and the sherbet and large plate are Moderntone.  The saucer on the far left is Royal Lace.  Since Hazel Atlas made all three patterns they are the same shade of blue.

Some patterns that have horizontal bands of glass that run around the rim with a separate design motif below tend to chip on the inside edge of the smooth band.  So far I’ve not seen that problem with Aurora – there isn’t a sharp transition from the horizontal band to the vertical ribs.
