This is one of the more unusual and hard to find items that we have, Maple Leaf pink depression glass cake plate made by US Glass in the mid 1930s. When I buy cake plates the challenge is finding ones in perfect condition. People used these plates in the 1930s and afterwards and you can imagine what decades of cutting cakes will do to a glass plate! This one is in perfect condition, without even a scratch.
Maple Leaf Pink Cake Plate
US Glass made several cake plates that were one offs, where they didn’t turn the pattern into more pieces or dinnerware and Maple Leaf is one of these. You can find the cake plate in pink or the cake plate in green depression glass, but you won’t find other pieces!
Maple Leaf is an appealing pattern with sprays of maple leaves on a stippled background and surrounded by criss-cross diamond shapes. The design is mold etched, so it is raised, but don’t worry about your cake sticking to the pattern because the design is on the underside. The top is smooth.
Many depression era cake plates are small, apparently made for an 8 inch layer cake. Jeannette’s Sunflower cake plate, one of the most common pieces of depression glass, is a little under 10 inches across. This Maple Leaf plate is 12 inches wide making it a spectacular way to display larger cakes. I’d guess some people used this for wedding cakes back in the day. It is an impressive way to show off your baking skills!
