Beautiful! Glass Makers Used Art Deco Shapes and Motifs

July 31, 2024 by Kathy Leave a Comment

Art Deco style was most obvious in the 1920s in buildings and typography and jewelry and furnishing designs. The Chrysler building has lovely vertical lines surmounted by curved ornate top. Design motifs include chevrons, stepped shapes both in structure and in interior lighting, curved and straight geometric shapes. (Link to photo and here.) We can see some of those motifs in depression-era glassware. Here are some examples.

Duncan Miller Winged Bowl and Candle Holder Line 16

This beautiful amber winged bowl is Duncan Miller Line #16 and dates to 1930-39 (dates per Replacements). I’ve seen it in green and amber. We got this at the 2016 National Depression Glass Association show. It includes Art Deco combining arches with linear elements, symmetry, and chevron shapes.

My bowl is a narrow oval shape with flared sides that follow into the glorious winged handles. It is about 14 1/2 inches wide and a little over 5 inches tall and quite narrow on the inside. It is meant to be part of a console set with the matching candle holder shown next.

I wish I’d bought this next piece when we saw it at the 2019 NDGA show. It too is Line 16 from Duncan Miller. You can imagine a set of these flanking the bowl for a gorgeous console set.

The seller identified this pink candle holder as from Duncan Miller, with its nice angular shaped stepped foot and contrasting round top.

Fostoria Line Trojan Etched Scroll Handles and Waterfall Stem

Keeping with the candle holder and console bowl – that combination itself was classic 1920s and 30s decor – let’s look at the scroll shapes from Fostoria. I’ve had several of these candle holders in green, blue and yellow and with various etches. This Trojan one is my favorite. I think.

The bowl is pretty spectacular!

This waterfall stem from Fostoria says it all. Perfect Art Deco shape!

Paden City Art Deco Decorated Center Handled Server

This server has so many Art Deco elements: The chevron and flared shaped decorations, bright colors, gold plus black, gold edged, rounded arched pointed shape.

Gold and Black Banded Rim Yellow Bowl

Decor in the 1920s used a lot of gold, often with black. I don’t know who made this bowl.

A Lagniappe – China

For a little different item, I couldn’t resist this small set of china. Too bad Dave didn’t share my delight!
