Pink Depression Glass and Fanciful Crystal for Tablescape Thursday

Tablescape Thursday 6 Comments »

Welcome to the first Tablescape Thursday with Elegant and Depression Glass to Share.  Thank you for visiting and thank you to Susan of Between Naps on the Porch for hosting this fun event.

It’s nearly Valentines Day so let’s go pink with a romantic table for two set with vintage glass and linens.  Let’s enjoy a beautiful combination of pink depression glass, crystal candle holders, rose pink taper candles and a tablecloth that my mom embroidered that I cherish.

Petal Swirl Pink Depression Glass Table for Two

The dinner plates, serving bowl, cups and saucers are Petal Swirl by Jeannette Glass.  Jeannette made this pattern from 1937 to 1938 and it’s a handsome design with strong lines and flair.  The rims have a pressed spiral and the centers have concentric ribbed circles.  You can see this is a good use of shape and pattern to make an appealing design.  You can read more about Petal Swirl here.

I sold our small bowls just before taking the picture so used Homespun fruit bowls.  I picked these because the pattern is another geometric with strong lines that complement the Swirl glass.  This pattern is another of Jeannette’s that, like Petal Swirl, is less well known and under appreciated compared to other Jeannette depression pink glassware.  Homespun has thin vertical ribs on the sides and a pressed square honeycomb pattern in the center.  It’s a good pattern too, but I must admit I like Petal Swirl better.

How about a glass of wine with this?  Since this table setting is all about lines and geometry I picked a set we have from Libbey that has a simple etched line on the bowl.

The beautiful swirled lines and graceful shapes of the plates and center bowl just cry for a beautiful candle holder set.  We get to enjoy our candles in a pair of contemporary crystal low holders from Italy.  These look like Cambridge Caprice or Paden City Largo elegant glassware and go so well with our Petal Swirl dinner set.

My favorite part of this tablescape is the tablecloth.  You can see it’s meant for a bridge table.  My Mom and Dad used to have friends over to play cards and Mom always liked to use the cloths she embroidered by hand.  I received this when she died and cherish it because she made it.  It has pink flowers and green leaves, very style and a rolled edge.  We have the matching napkins but I didn’t put them out today.

I hope you enjoyed reading about our Valentine’s Day romantic dinner for two with pink depression glass.  You can see all the glass posted here in our store, Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.   Please leave a comment to let me know how you liked this post.  It’s new for me and a lot of fun to write about our glass for sale.

Jeannette Petal Swirl Pink Depression Glass – Easy Collectible for You

Petal Swirl Pink Depression Glass Salad Bowl

Petal Swirl Pink Depression Glass Salad Bowl

Now here is a pink depression glass pattern that is easy on the eyes, easy to collect and easy to enjoy.  The pattern is Swirl, called Petal Swirl by Jeannette Glass.

You can see the swirl design on the sides of the salad bowl and the scalloped rim around the top.  This is one of the pink depression glass patterns you can collect and enjoy every day if you choose.

Jeannette made this only two years, 1937 to 1938, and in a full dinner set with many accessory pieces like a vase, pitcher, butter dish, candle holder and candy dish.  It’s a good pattern that doesn’t have a lot of spots that nick easily; it’s reasonably sturdy.  Yet for some reason it is not terribly expensive.  People like it; they don’t pursue it as much as you would think.  For example the 9 inch salad bowl is under $30, certainly among the most affordable patterns.

Besides pink Jeannette made this in ultra marine teal and solid blue delphite.  The teal is really pretty too.

We have a good set of the pink so please check us out!

Doric Pink Depression Glass Candy Jar – Stash Your Goodies with Style

Doric Pink Depression Glass Candy Jar from Jeannette

Doric Pink Depression Glass Candy Jar from Jeannette

We all have candy hanging around the house this time of year so where can you put it?  If you leave it out in a bowl it gets stale and if you put it in the bag in the cupboard it will slowly migrate to the back.  This candy jar from Jeannette Glass is the perfect solution.

This depression glass pattern is called Doric.  The motif is simple:  There is a band of squares about an inch below the rim with plain squares alternating with classic design squares.  Even the finial on the candy jar lid has the alternating squares.

Jeannette made Doric from 1935 to 1938 in pink, green and Delphite.  Delphite is opaque blue.  This is one of the less expensive pink depression glass patterns with mold etched designs and there are many pieces to seek if  you choose to collect this glassware.

Imagine using this on your shelf or giving it as a fantastic Valentines’s Day present.  It’s perfect for your sweetheart.

Doric & Pansy Teal Depression Glass Salad Plate

Doric & Pansy Teal Depression Glass Salad Plate

Jeannette made Doric and Pansy for just a couple years, 1937 to 1938, and in ultra marine or teal, pink and some crystal.  From what I've read, they made more pieces in teal than pink which is unusual compared to other depression patterns.  Jeannette's teal or ultramarine is a rich blue green color that can have a little more blue or green from piece to piece.  It is very pretty.

Doric and Pansy has squares with pansy flowers in them that alternate with squares that have a simple geometric motif. The geometric motif is the "Doric" part of the name. It is a pretty pattern but not extensive. There are enough pieces for a small dinner set that includes a few serving pieces, tumblers, three sizes of plates, bowls, cups and saucers. It is a nice size set that you can use and enjoy.

I've not had a problem with chipping particularly with this, certainly less than with the similar Doric pattern.  The glass is thin with the design on the outside, or bottom in the case of plates, and you don't notice wear on a busy pattern like this, so even a plate with a few utensil marks will look sharp.  The only place that tends to nick is a ridge on the handles of cups or sugar bowls.  Jeannette made this same shape handle in Adam depression glass and it gets nicks easily.

Jeannette made Doric and Pansy in a small children's set for toy glass dishes. These are called Pretty Polly which is a good name since they are very pretty. They are also rather expensive, but in line with other depression toy glassware. We have the Pretty Polly pink cups and saucers listed.

Top 10 Reasons to Collect Depression Glass – #6. It’s Fun!

Pink Depression Glass Candy Jar - Jeannette's Doric Pattern

Pink Depression Glass Candy Jar - Jeannette's Doric Pattern

OK, we gave reasons like style and warm family memories.  Convinced this depression glass is neat stuff?  Let’s look at one reason that fits everyone:  It’s fun.

Collecting means lots of things.

You can collect glass that you like.  Maybe you have a window sill and you like the way green and amber and pink creamers look on it sparkling in the sunshine.  So collect colored glass creamers.  When your shelf is full you can get a few others with matching sugars and enjoy alternating them with your regular dishes.

Maybe you find a candy jar like this one and it’s fascinating to find out about the variety and designs and you get hooked on finding neat candy jars.

Or you get this jar, read my blog and learn that the pattern is called Doric; it comes in pink and green and Jeannette Glass made it.  You decide you like this and you’d like, oh let’s see, a cake plate, a creamer and sugar and maybe some dessert plates.  You get those pieces, have a lot of fun using them, learn there are coffee cups and saucers and tumblers, so you go on a hunt for a few more pieces too.

With collecting half the fun is in the hunt.  You can take friends with you to antique stores, browse the internet (don’t forget Catladykate’s depression glass store), decide what to buy, go to auctions. It’s a lot of fun. Every time you go somewhere you’ll spot a store or a flea market and you can stop and see what they have. Even if you don’t buy anything it’s still fun.

Then there are the collectors who decide to pursue every piece in a pattern, or they want a candleholder in every pattern Fostoria Glass made, who enjoy getting that last elusive piece.  But  you don’t have to be single-minded.  It’s fine to decide, like one of my favorite customers, that your goal is to have enough amber depression glass for Thanksgiving dinner with friends.  These customers bought Madrid, Patrician, Normandie and Sharon glass and were thrilled.  Their table looked great!

So there you have it.  It’s fun.  You can enjoy the hunt; you can enjoy the purchase; and you can enjoy the glass when it’s yours!

Jeannette’s Floral Poinsettia Pink Depression Glass – What’s that Flower?

Jeannette Depression Glass 0 Comment »
Jeannette's Floral Poinsettia Pink Depression Glass Candleholder

Jeannette's Floral Poinsettia Pink Depression Glass Candleholder

Here’s a depression glass pattern that has a bit of controversy about the design.  This is Jeannette’s Floral, which is nicknamed Poinsettia.  The design is big flowers and pointed leaves with multiple lobes, supposedly that looks like a poinsettia.

My depression glass reference mentions there’s been a disagreement over the years whether this is really a poinsettia.  The leaves don’t look much like our modern poinsettias, that’s for sure.

Other observers have pointed out that the 4-part pointy leaves look like hemp plants and that the flowers look like passion flowers.  I can’t comment on the first but the passion flowers don’t quite fit either.

Floral – regardless what it’s supposed to be – is a neat pattern that came in many interesting pieces such as this candleholder.  It’s a relatively affordable pattern, even in pink, and you’ll find cone-shaped footed tumblers for under $25.

Right now we have the Floral pink sugar, candle and tumblers in stock.

Louisa Carnival Glass or Jeannette Floragold?

Uncategorized 0 Comment »
Westmoreland Louisa Carnival Nut Bowl

Westmoreland Louisa Carnival Nut Bowl

Norm W, a fellow glass lover sent me this photo to ask for more information as the reference books do not mention this shape for Jeannette’s Floragold glass. The pattern looks like Floragold, although the flowers and leaves are a little more rounded, but the scalloped rim and little curled feet look like the oval ice cream bowl in Floragold. I thought that was what it was.

Meanwhile Norm W found that this is in fact Louisa. Louisa is an older pattern, true carnival glass, and you’ll read in most books that Jeannette’s Floragold is sometimes called Louisa due to the resemblance. Looking at this photo you can see why!

Norm’s comment:  What I have found out so far is this – the Floragold pattern that was produced did not include this piece. It was produced by Westmoreland and is an earlier carnival piece referred to as “Louisa”.   I was told that this was the nut bowl.   However, it is not identfied in the Carnival Glass encyclopedia in Marigold.

If you have more information about this nut bowl, please post here for Norm.

Jeannette Glass Petal Swirl Pink Depression Salad Bowl

Jeannette Glass Petal Swirl Pink Depression Salad Bowl

Here is a pink depression glass pattern from Jeannette Glass that won’t send you to the poor house!  The last depression pattern we talked about was Cherry Blossom, which is moderately expensive, with a dinner plate costing somewhere between $15 and $35.
The design shown, Swirl or Petal Swirl, is from the same manufacturer, Jeannette Glass, and was made late in the depression, 1937 to 1938.  You see the design is made of swirled ridges and a scalloped border.  It is very nice but does not have as many fans as Cherry Blossom.  It is also rather available and was never reproduced.  Those two things – availability and safety – make it an attractive pattern to collect.  You can find many pieces which makes it fun.
It’s no fun collecting a pattern you can never find and it’s not any fun to want something that is darn expensive.  Petal Swirl is fairly inexpensive, with dinner plates in the $12 to $25 range.  You will want to check over those scalloped points pretty carefully and the little ridge on the inside edge of the rim, but you won’t have any problem finding nice pieces in good condition that you can buy.
Best of all, you will want to use this!  You can get a usable set with plates, bowls, serving pieces, cups, saucers and tumblers in your choice of pink, a nice aquamarine / teal color and some pieces came in a solid blue called Delphite.  None of the pieces are impossibly rare or stratospherically priced.  We’re showing the aquamarine footed console bowl next to give you an idea of the pretty color.
