Fostoria Glass Coin Ruby Red Candle Holder for Christmas

Fostoria Glass Coin Ruby Red Candle Holder for Christmas

Last week we covered several of our stemware listings in honor of the upcoming holiday feasts.  Much as I like vintage etched crystal goblets I was glad to finish the week up and move to a new topic.  So what’s up this week?

This week marks the kickoff of the Christmas holiday and buying season – although many of you might have all your gifts nicely wrapped and tagged hiding under the bed – and others of you probably procrastinate till Christmas eve.  Nonetheless, in honor of the week, I want to show off one of our Christmas glass pieces, this ruby red candle holder from Fostoria.

This pattern is called Coin and those satin round sections look like little coins.  Originally in the 1880s coin patterns mimicked US coins but this was frowned on by the folks that worry about counterfeiting.  The later designs look coin-ish but don’t replicate any real US coinage designs.

Fostoria made Coin from 1958 to 1982.  When Fostoria went bankrupt in the mid 1980s Lancaster Colony bought many molds, including Coin.  Lancaster Colony then remade many of the pieces.  These reproductions / remakes were priced high enough initially that they didn’t crash the market for the original vintage pieces.

Lancaster also made a few pieces for Avon that today are very slow sellers.  (As in they don’t sell.)  Some of the remade pieces included the urn, creamer and sugar, salver (which is a fancy name for a big plate), nappy (which is a fancy name for a smallish bowl), cigarette holder, candy jar, covered bowl and oval bowl.

Lancaster Colony did not remake the ruby candle holders.  These are the original vintage pieces.

Eye Candy for Glass Lovers – Fostoria Versailles Green Bowl

Fostoria Glass Versailles Etched Green Flared Console Bowl

Fostoria Glass Versailles Etched Green Flared Console Bowl

I was thinking this evening about what are my favorite pieces and this is definitely in the running.  This is stunning and the photo does not come close to showing how the deep green glass shows off the fan and scroll etch or how the three footed triangle shape is perfect.

Fostoria etched Versailles on green, blue, pink and amber.  I have all three colors listed – Versailles is one of the patterns we specialize in – and vacillate between the green and the blue as my favorite.  Green?  Blue?? Both?  I don’t care for the pink as much.

Fostoria made Versailles from 1928 to 1936, so through the first half of the difficult depression period.  They used the Fairfax blank for stemware which has clear crystal foot and stem and colored bowl.  The stemware is choice.  I have a few piece – it sells quickly although it’s rather pricey.

If you want to own a spectacular centerpiece you could try this bowl with two of the matching candles.  You don’t need the candles to have a beautiful display although they look superb flanking the bowl as a console set.  Fostoria made several shapes of candles in Versailles and the green ones we have look like miniature bowls with three tab feet.  They match the bowl and the group together is a sight to see!

Why Fostoria Meadow Rose Glass Is So Popular

Fostoria Glass Meadow Rose Etched Candleholder

Fostoria Glass Meadow Rose Etched Candleholder

I have a confession to make. When I first saw Fostoria Meadow Rose etched elegant glass in the glass reference books I didn’t like it.  It seemed wimpy.  In person it is a peaceful beautiful patter that has a classy style all its own.

The candle holder shown here is a good example.  You can see the design of flowers and swags around a central plain spot.  Looks ok, right?   It’s much prettier than it looks, and of course I like candle holders so it is very much more than ok.

Fostoria made Meadow Rose in crystal and some pieces in a light azure blue that is stunning.  It is on the Baroque blank so you know to look for the graceful fleur de lis and curlicue handles.

I picked up a few pieces at first only because the pattern sold well online and then found out how special this is.  Now I know why it sells well!

Fostoria Glass Coronet Candleholder with Cynthia Cutting

Fostoria Glass Coronet Candleholder with Cynthia Cutting

How do you like the rams horn design on this candle holder from Fostoria Glass? This is the Coronet blank with the Cynthia spray cutting.  For some reason you don’t see much Coronet but when you do it is memorable.

Coronet as three wavy lines around the rim.  Take a close look at the flat section around the candle cups and you’ll see the wavy lines.  The center and arms curl like rams horns and look great sparkling in the candle light.

I like this design and you will too!

Fostoria Glass June Etched Topaz Yellow Scroll Candleholder

Fostoria Glass June Etched Topaz Yellow Scroll Candleholder

Candleholders, Beautiful Candleholders. This one is Fostoria June

Isn’t this pretty? I showed off some of my favorite things – console bowls, center handled servers – and here is my third, etched elegant candleholders. This particular one is Fostoria Glass June etched. The etching is beautiful, yes, and the color is a soft pretty yellow, but what makes this one just perfect in my eyes is the wonderful art deco scroll design with the wings on the column edges. Just a perfect example of art deco design.

We have other June etched candleholders (plus other pieces) and some very nice mushroom shaped candleholders in Fostoria Versailles, plus the Baroque curved glass with Chintz or Meadow Rose or Navarre etch. Can you tell I like candleholders?

One little question is what to call these. Are they candleholders? Or candlesticks? Or candle sticks? Or?? Replacements calls them candlesticks but that sounds like the tapers themselves, not the holders. So I use candleholders and just have to accept that spell check thinks that is wrong! If you have an idea, please leave a comment. And if you would like to see the huge variety available, here are the candleholdersavailable today on eBay.
