Pink Saturday – Florentine Poppy Depression Glass Sugar Bowl

Florentine #1 Poppy Pink Depression Glass Sugar Bowl

Florentine #1 Poppy Pink Depression Glass Sugar Bowl

Thank you for joining me this week for Pink Saturday and thank you to Beverly of How Sweet the Sound for being our gracious hostess.

This week it’s depression glass for us to enjoy.  Hazel Atlas made Florentine during the beginning of the depression, from 1932 to 1935.  They must have realized this was a good pattern because they produced it in two different shapes.  This pink sugar bowl has scallops on the foot and the bowl itself is round.  This shape is Florentine #1.  The other shape has smooth round feet and angular shaped pieces and is Florentine #2.

Collectors dubbed this pattern Poppy because of the beautiful poofs of poppy flowers and leaves.  On plates the design repeats around the center with the leaves connecting the flowers in a swag motif.  Poppy is one of my favorite patterns as you can tell and we try to have it in stock all the time in our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.

Besides the soft pink glassware Hazel Atlas made this in green – our favorite grass green color – and a gorgeous soft yellow and clear.  There are a few pieces in blue as well.  Oddly the yellow seems to be the most available color with green a little less common, then pink and blue.  In fact I’ve only had a few pieces of pink since I started selling glass in 1999.

We went to several antique malls in Texas this week and I saw two pieces of Florentine.  Both were beat up and dirty.  The sugar bowl with badly chipped lid was $54.  I was so disappointed to see so little depression glass and almost everything we saw was damaged and over priced.  It’s fun to go antiquing but it’s more fun when you find something you like.

Thank you for visiting.

Buying Guide:  Florentine pink sugar is available at Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.  It’s like antiquing with your best friend.

Tablescape Thursday – Doric Pink Depression Glass

Tablescape Thursday 4 Comments »

Thank you to Susan from Between Naps on the Porch and friends for this fun Tablescape Thursday. Today we’re having lunch on pink depression glass.

Doric and Windsor Pink Depression Glass

Doric and Windsor Pink Depression Glass

I’m blending two patterns today, both from Jeannette Glass.  The plates and bowls are Doric and the tumblers are Windsor pink depression glass.  Doric looks refined and classy.  The design alternates plain squares with stylized flower squares around the outside and a simple spoke pattern in the center.  Take a look at this berry bowl to see what I mean.

I thought this pattern looked good on the table.  What do you think?

Here it is closer at hand so you can see the interesting contrast with Windsor next to the Doric glassware.

Let’s look at the Windsor tumblers up close.  You can see this is a geometric pressed pattern like diamonds.

Windsor Pink Depression Glass Tumbler

Both of these patterns are the same shade of pink.  The tumbler looks a little darker because it is thicker glass.  Jeannette Glass made Windsor from 1936 to the early 1940s in clear and green plus the pink.  There are more pieces of clear than any other color with pink a close second.  There are even a few pieces of ice blue and opaque Delphite blue.  Combinations of pink and clear look great together.

Can you see the two-light candle holders?  They are Navarre etched on Fostoria’s Baroque crystal, very nice pieces that go well with this pretty table setting.

Wouldn’t this be a pretty table for lunch with friends?  The candles glow and reflect off the crystal and pink glass and the pink vase catches your eye.  I hope you enjoyed visiting me for our pink Thursday table.

Romance of Vintage Glassware – Fostoria Romance Etched Crystal

Gift Buying Guide - Collectible Glass 0 Comment »
Fostoria Glass Romance Etched Lily Pond Shallow Bowl

Fostoria Glass Romance Etched Lily Pond Shallow Bowl

Vintage glassware is such a romantic collectible.  Someone owned this before you; someone treasured it and now it is yours.  What a wonderful way to have a connection to the past.

Here is a shallow bowl in Fostoria’s well-named Romance etched crystal.  Yes, Romance is the name of this pattern that has bouquets of flowers all tied into nosegays with ribbons and bows.  You can see the ribbon circling the piece to connect the posies.

This style of bowl is great to hold fruit and even better used to float roses or peonies.  It is called a lily bowl or lily pond and you can imagine how your favorite lily blossoms would look in here.

Romance is very like the earlier June pattern from Fostoria Glass.  June threads a second ribbon through the flowers in a U shape and Fostoria used it on different shapes.  Romance dates to the 1950s and 60s and has the clean simple lines so popular then.  June was earlier and mostly on the Fairfax blank which had a little more complex design.  Another way to tell is that Romance came in crystal only.  You can find June in pink, topaz yellow and blue besides crystal.

Both patterns are beautiful.  Of course if you like colored glassware then pick June and if you relish clear crystal in simple curvy shapes then Romance is for you.  Romance is considerably less costly than June and may be more plentiful.  You won’t go wrong with either pattern.

An earlier post about June suggested it as a unique wedding gift.  Likewise, Romance will be a fun gift for someone special too.  The name is perfect for a shower gift, wedding gift or best yet, a couple celebrating their anniversary.

If you are interested in Romance etched glassware then please check our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.

Blue Roses and Blue Glass – Concord Rose China Dinnerware

Tablescape Thursday 7 Comments »

Thank you for letting me share our blue rose table with you. Thank you to Susan from Between Naps on the Porch and friends for this fun Tablescape Thursday. Today we’re having dinner on Concord Rose china from Syracuse.

Concord Rose Dinnerware Syracuse China

Concord Rose Dinnerware Syracuse China

Think blue roses and you have this contemporary dinnerware.   It’s durable and has a pretty design of long stemmed blue roses.

Concord Rose Sugar Bowl

Concord Rose Sugar Bowl

But it needs to be dressed up, don’t you think?  How about adding a dash of blue?  Cobalt blue depression glass adds that spot of color we need.  This Moderntone cobalt blue depression glass sherbet looks great on the plate and we’ll have fun using this for our fruit salad.

Concord Rose and Moderntone

Let’s take a closer look.  I like this combination.  It changes my plain table from boring to fabulous.

The glasses were using are interesting.  When we think of Anchor Hocking we think of quality glass for daily use, not cut or fancy, but sturdy and well made.  I found a set of eight tumblers marked Anchor Hocking at the flea market that have a fuchsia cutting.  Unusual.

It’s hard to see the cutting and it’s worth seeing.

Anchor Hocking Fuchsia Cut Tumbler

I hope you enjoyed seeing a different sort of table today.  This time I combined Concord Rose dinnerware from Syracuse China, Moderntone blue depression glass sherbets, fuchsia cut tumblers from Anchor Hocking and a Fostoria Navarre etched candle holder.

Let me know how you mix depression glass in  your home.  You are welcome to post photos of your glass on our Facebook page at www.DepressionGlassFun.com.

Clear Depression Glass Stemware – Hocking Colonial Knife & Fork

Depression Glass Guide 0 Comment »
Hocking Colonial Knife & Fork Clear Depression Glass Wine

Hocking Colonial Knife & Fork Clear Depression Glass Wine

We’ve looked at a lot of colored glass – blue, pink, green depression and elegant etched Fostoria – and I thought it would be a fun change to see some clear depression glass.

One conundrum is what to call this stuff.  My depression glass reference books by Gene Florence call colorless glass “crystal” but as a dealer I found that confused my customers.  Some see the word “crystal” and visualize the gorgeous quality lead crystal.  Ummm, nope, sorry.  This is depression glass so it’s decent quality but very far from high end lead crystal.  (Let’s not even talk about the confusion with the clear Waterford Waffle pattern.)

So I’ve taken to calling it “clear”.  This is what Replacements.com does too so I’m in good company.

The small stem you see here is the Colonial pattern from Hocking Glass.  It’s typical depression glass with a molded pattern and ordinary glass.  You may recognize the nickname Knife and Fork, which refers to the ridged design between the scallops.  Hocking made this pattern in green and pink, some yellow, some opaque white, a little blue and of course in clear.

The clear is not as enticing as the colored glass but it has its own charm.  For one thing it plays well with other colors and helps if you want to merge multiple colors.  Putting a few pieces of clear along with green and pink really helps.  For another the clear is much less expensive – true for almost all patterns – and you can add a few pieces to use every day without breaking the bank.  For another, colored depression stemware is getting harder to find.  Naturally stemware and tumblers took a beating over the past 80 years so when you can find clear stems to augment your depression set, go for it.

Pink Saturday – Old Cafe Pink Depression Glass Candy Dish

Old Cafe Pink Depression Glass Candy Dish

Old Cafe Pink Depression Glass Candy Dish

Welcome to this week’s Pink Saturday hosted by Beverly of How Sweet the Sound.  Thank you for visiting me.

Today we have pink depression glass stealing the show.  This is the two-handled dish for candy or mints in Hocking’s Old Cafe pattern.  Old Cafe is a small pattern with only a few dinnerware pieces but several attractive accessory items like this candy plate, a deeper candy bowl with lid, an oval olive dish and a vase.

You’ve probably seen look-a-likes for the vase, not exactly repros but more an extended production of this for the floral market.  The design is a wide band between two narrower bands and all the bands are smooth on the inside and rounded on the outside.

Hocking made this depression glassware pattern in pink and clear and it is surprisingly attractive.  You wouldn’t think such a simple design would be so effective but like most of the geometric designed depression patterns Old Cafe has little extras.  You can see one on this candy dish.  The ribs that make up the pattern come together on the base to make a ridged bottom.  It looks great.

Buying information:  We have this piece and several others in our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass at www.CatladykatesGlass.com.

A Wearin’ of the Green – Princess Green Depression Glass Hat Bowl

Depression Glass 0 Comment »
Princess Green Depression Glass 9 Deep Hat Bowl

Princess Green Depression Glass 9 Deep Hat Bowl

Since St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner so let’s look at a few green items.  This is one of my favorite green depression glass patterns, Princess by Hocking Glass.  I have a large selection in pink but have to admit I prefer green to the pink.  Hocking’s green in this pattern is just a tad lighter color, a little fresher than the usual green.

I like the way the scroll designs on this pattern look like curtains sweeping away on a stage.  It makes me feel like I’m at the theater waiting for the curtain to go up and the play to begin.

Most of the Princess pieces are octagonal, really squares with the corners cut off, and this bowl is round at the top and octagonal at the base.  It is called the 9 inch deep hat-shaped bowl.  It is 9 inches across and almost 4 inches deep and it looks deeper than it is.  A bowl of this style would be great for a pasta salad, especially one with some green peppers or green rotini in it

If you like Princess depression glass be sure to check out our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.  It’s like antiquing with your best friend.

Tablescape Thursday: Beat the Blues with Moderntone

Thank you for letting me share our blue depression glass table with you.  Thank you to Susan from Between Naps on the Porch and friends for this fun Tablescape Thursday.

Moderntone Cobalt Blue Depression Glass Table for Two

Moderntone Cobalt Blue Depression Glass Table for Two

Today we’re having lunch for two and enjoying the first daffodils of the year.  Don’t the flowers add a touch of spring?  Daffodils are my favorite but they won’t bloom outdoors here until April.

Dave Eickholt Crystalline Glaze Green & Blue Vases

Dave Eickholt Crystalline Glaze Green & Blue Vases

It’s sunny outside – blue skies and a warm breeze (warmish anyway) – so let’s celebrate a good day for blue.  We have blue glass plates, sherbets, cups and saucers and a deep blue crystalline glaze vase from artist Dave Eickholt.  The cheerful yellow flowers look great in Dave’s green art vase.

Moderntone Blue Depression Glass Setting

Moderntone Blue Depression Glass Setting

Moderntone is depression glass. Hazel Atlas made this from 1934 to 1942 in cobalt blue and some amethyst purple and that’s the color people collect the most. They knew they had a good thing going and re-issued this pattern in the early 1950s in a white glass they called Platonite that had overlays of bright colors. I like the transparent blue the best. Doesn’t it look good on the white hand-crocheted doily tablecloth?

I try to keep Moderntone in stock in our store Vintage Elegant Depression Glass by Catladykate and at the moment we have the pieces shown in the photo.  Here is a close up of the sherbet so you can see it better.

Moderntone Cobalt Blue Depression Glass Sherbet

Can you see the art deco influence here with the round and square shapes mixed?

Moderntone Cobalt Blue Depression Glass Sugar

I love flowers so when I saw the daffodils grocery shopping it was easy to pick a bunch.  The yellow is pretty bright with the cobalt blue,  I think next time we decide to show off blue I’ll get pink flowers or pick soft apricot colored pansies.

The smaller vase is a great combination of cooler navy colors in a crystalline glaze, also by noted artist Dave Eickholt.   It’s fun to mix these art pieces with my depression glass – quite a contrast that works.  The dark blue vase helps tone down the bright flowers and you can see how well it melds with the green vase and the cobalt glass.

Pink Saturday: Sharon Cabbage Rose Pink Depression Glass

Sharon Cabbage Rose Pink Depression Glass Dinner Plate

Sharon Cabbage Rose Pink Depression Glass Dinner Plate

It’s time for Pink Saturday with Beverly from How Sweet the Sound and her other guests, just in time to reward us for finishing another week. Pink Sharon depression glass is the star today.

Sharon is depression glass, which means it was mass produced during the 1930s and sold cheaply or given away as premiums with food or at the movie theater.  Even though we believe most depression glass was cheap – since so much was free for purchasing a product – it actually was not all that inexpensive given the overall lack of extra money.  For example, a family could send in coupons to get a whole set of glass to go with that free piece for a couple dollars, but that $2-3 represented several days wages.  Imagine today spending half your weekly paycheck on dishes.

What this means is that some patterns have pieces that are hard to find compared to others.  Bowls and tumblers are scarce in most patterns – you can understand tumblers because that is what we all break even today – but bowls?  Think about your dinnerware.  Most likely you had to buy bowls separately for your tableware and the same thing was true with depression glass.

With Sharon one of the eye-opening pieces is the salad plate, which is about 7 1/2 inches wide.  This small size plate is perfect for dessert, lunch or salad.  It runs about double the price of the dinner plate.

Federal Glass made Sharon from 1935 to 1939 in pink, amber and green and a few pieces of clear.  It has a beautiful design of big rose sprays and smaller bouquets on the rim.  It’s a pretty pattern.

If you like this, please check our pieces listed in our online store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.  We have a good selection with more to list.  We specialize in certain patterns of depression glass, including Sharon Cabbage Rose, and elegant glass from Fostoria, Cambridge and Central.  Come see us today for best selection.

Pink Saturday: Pretty Princess in Pink

Depression Glass 22 Comments »
Princess Pink Depression Glass Sherbet

Princess Pink Depression Glass Sherbet

Thank you to Beverly from How Sweet the Sound for hosting Pink Saturday.  What a perfect color for cheerful thoughts of spring.

Up today is our Princess.  This is pink depression glass from Hocking, made about 1931 to 1935 when the country was deep in the Great Depression.  Pink glassware – and blue, amber, green and amethyst – was given away as premiums or offered with coupons.  It was a good way for the thrifty housewife to get something beautiful for her family while saving money.

Today we can tell the pieces in patterns that were not popular premiums and those that ladies needed to send in hard-to-find cash to get.  Those are the pieces that are more expensive or harder to find.  Sherbets are fairly common in most depression glass patterns but not so readily available in pink Princess.

Sherbets are fun pieces.  You can use them for a fruit cup, to serve applesauce, yogurt or cottage cheese, fill them with berries, custard and cream, use them for cake with lemon sauce and even use them for sherbet.

Pink isn’t just for Saturday.  And pink depression glass is a fun way to enjoy pink, beautiful glass, and a link to our history.

We have a good selection of pink Princess in our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass and offer coupons to our blog and newsletter subscribers.  Just use coupon news when you check out.
