Florentine #1 Poppy Pink Depression Glass Sugar Bowl

Florentine #1 Poppy Pink Depression Glass Sugar Bowl

Thank you for joining me this week for Pink Saturday and thank you to Beverly of How Sweet the Sound for being our gracious hostess.

This week it’s depression glass for us to enjoy.  Hazel Atlas made Florentine during the beginning of the depression, from 1932 to 1935.  They must have realized this was a good pattern because they produced it in two different shapes.  This pink sugar bowl has scallops on the foot and the bowl itself is round.  This shape is Florentine #1.  The other shape has smooth round feet and angular shaped pieces and is Florentine #2.

Collectors dubbed this pattern Poppy because of the beautiful poofs of poppy flowers and leaves.  On plates the design repeats around the center with the leaves connecting the flowers in a swag motif.  Poppy is one of my favorite patterns as you can tell and we try to have it in stock all the time in our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.

Besides the soft pink glassware Hazel Atlas made this in green – our favorite grass green color – and a gorgeous soft yellow and clear.  There are a few pieces in blue as well.  Oddly the yellow seems to be the most available color with green a little less common, then pink and blue.  In fact I’ve only had a few pieces of pink since I started selling glass in 1999.

We went to several antique malls in Texas this week and I saw two pieces of Florentine.  Both were beat up and dirty.  The sugar bowl with badly chipped lid was $54.  I was so disappointed to see so little depression glass and almost everything we saw was damaged and over priced.  It’s fun to go antiquing but it’s more fun when you find something you like.

Thank you for visiting.

Buying Guide:  Florentine pink sugar is available at Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.  It’s like antiquing with your best friend.

We collected Depression glass ages ago and I still have a few pieces — mostly glasses and pitchers. It’s pretty glass. I may have to get it out and use it again!

  3. I love the depression glass. I have more green than pink, but it is at the top of my treasure list for this yard sale season. Yours is beautiful.
