This Pink Saturday shows a special offer on one of my favorite depression glass patterns, Dogwood. I’ve read that the Dogwood 8 inch lunch plate is one of the easiest to find pieces of pink depression glass. That may be – at one time I saw a LOT of them – but lately depression glass has been thin pickings at antique shops and estate sales.

Dogwood is from MacBeth Evans. Like their other patterns, American Sweetheart and Petalware, Dogwood is thin glass that looks so fragile. It is actually quite sturdy. I find this glass fascinating. I love the big flowers and the simple design and that thin, durable glass is such a mystery. How did they make such thin glass that wore so well?

You don’t find many pieces of damaged Dogwood. It can break of course but you don’t see lots of chips or nicks or rough spots in the glass. The lovely design tends to hide surface wear too, so you never feel like you are looking at a plate that has gone through heavy family use.

Dogwood looks like “good dishes”. You can imagine the original owners using this set on Sunday or when they had company. Depression glass was often given away or sold for very little, but the people who owned it treasured its lovely designs and lively colors in a time when everything else was so gloomy. That may be one reason that Dogwood is usually in good condition.

I mentioned this is a special offer. We’re closing down our larger store that has been on the TIAS online antique mall and I’ve put a lot of glass on eBay. This particular set of six Dogwood plates is on auction this week for quite lot less than the plates would sell individually and has free shipping. If you like it please check our auction out and make a bid.

You’ve seen pretty Princess pink depression glass here before. I showed it off in a tablescape plus individual pieces for Pink Saturday. I realized that this neat serving bowl never got its place in the sun so… ta da! The Princess octagonal serving bowl makes its debut on Pink Saturday.

Princess plates and bowls are octagonal. They look like Hocking started off making square designs, then someone got creative and cut the corners with a scalloped pair of scissors. You end up with square pieces that with fancy corners.

This big serving bowl looks more octagonal than some pieces. And it shows the pattern so well that I thought you might like to see it.

Serving pieces are an easy way to add a different look than your main dishes. You can use completely different serving bowls or platters and it looks good. This Princess pink bowl is 9 inches across, a good size for fruit salad or pasta.

Don’t you wonder how the original owners used the vintage glass we love? This bowl was in a big set of Princess that the first owner used for their good dishes. Back in the depression era people ate less than we do today and they had more meat and potatoes, boiled vegetables. Pasta went under spaghetti sauce, not in a salad. Today we are blessed with more variety and an informal style that welcomes mixing and matching.

Consider using a piece or two of your favorite depression glass on your table. It’s fun and such a satisfying way to enjoy your glass.

We have the Princess octagonal serving bowl in our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.

Even the bowls have this interesting shape – four main sides and then four shorter sides – and that’s what we have for this week’s Pink Saturday glass treat.

Princess Pink Depression Glass Berry Bowl

The design reminds me of stage curtains. See how the curled up scrolls unfurl into the draped curtain? It’s quite pretty. Some of the pieces, like the creamer and sugar, seem a little awkward, almost ungainly, but the common plates and bowls look great together. The curvy design offsets the squared off shapes and the combination is good.

I especially like the little tab handles on the bowl. Since it doesn’t have a rim the handles give you an easy way to carry the bowl when you set the table and something to hold when you are using the bowl for fruit slices. Plus they look good.

I picked Sharon this week because our roses outside are gasping for the last breath of summer. Most years we have a big flush right before the first frosts in early October and I don’t know whether we’ll see that in 2011. My garden has been spotty this year.

Sharon is an interesting pattern. Federal Glass must have distributed it widely since you’ll find some all over the country. It’s thicker than some depression glass patterns and has a solid, sturdy feel to it. In fact I’ve read that the old door-to-door peddlers used to claim you could put the dinner plate upside down and stand on it. I’ve also read that if you do that today it will break. Personally I’d rather leave the plates on the table and not try that out!

Sometimes people aren’t sure how to use depression glass, or they think they need a full set of all one pattern. That would be fun to try for but exhausting! (And for some patterns rather expensive.) Serving pieces like the platters are easy to use. Get it out to serve a tray full of cookies or your pre-dinner snacks. Or you could do as they did in the 1930s and use it for your roast slices or hamburger patties. Serving pieces don’t all have to match. Plus your guests will tend to handle a plate of cookies with care!

I’m entranced by the signature pieces of the depression era: center handled servers, console bowls, etched candle holders and these cone-shaped footed tumblers. These are just so delightful. As soon as you see one of these tumblers you know you are slipping back in time, back to the era of wonderful glass. That era gave us great glass but other things were not so wonderful.

Jeannette made Floral in the early part of the depression, 1932 to 1935, when things were really tough in this country. Massive unemployment, bread lines are what we think of when we think of the depression. Our images are formed from pictures of men in fedoras in grainy black and white. Somehow the gorgeous colors and designs slipped in there, almost not noticed in movies. I can believe this lovely glass added cheer when families needed it most.

It’s interesting that stylish glass and the wonderful pieces and shapes we don’t see, the colors and pretty designs, all happened when things were at the rock bottom for many of our families.

Our daughter, who is my favorite antiquing buddy, has been home the last couple weeks giving us time to go to all the area antique malls. We had a lot of fun but we didn’t find much glass. Every time we go I am shocked at how little glass we find. We saw a few pieces of Fostoria, including a lovely crystal June bowl that had a bit too much wear, and a few pieces of depression glass. Most of the prices were on the high side.

Antiquing at a regular store is a lot of fun but not a very good way to get the pieces you want. Shopping online is more fruitful as you will find more to choose.

One depression glass pattern we came across in West Branch was Dogwood. The pieces were a little expensive so I didn’t buy them but do want to share with you what Dogwood looks like. It has a unique style, looks like brocade etched glass, and is lovely.

Dogwood Pink Depression Glass Cup MacBeth Evans

Can you see why this reminds me of brocade etched elegant glass? The pattern is rich yet simple and the big flowers are perfect on the pink glass. Yet Dogwood is mass produced depression glass from MacBeth Evans, made 1930 to 1934. It’s perfect yet today.

If you enjoy these blog parties then please plan to join me Thursday evenings for Fancy Fridays. Pick out something fancy and fun and come join us. I’ll bring the glass!

Do you like pink depression glass but aren’t sure how to use it? The serving bowl featured this week for Pink Saturday makes that decision easy. This is the serving bowl in American Sweetheart pink depression glass from MacBeth Evans.

American Sweetheart Pink Depression Glass Big Fruit Bowl

More people enjoy American Sweetheart than almost any other depression glass pattern – it is certainly in the top 5 or 6 patterns. The design is raised on the exterior, leaving the inside of the bowl smooth. That makes it easier to clean. I don’t know how MacBeth Evans did it, but their glass always looks delicate although MacBeth Evans glass is sturdy despite being thin.

This bowl is called a large fruit bowl or large berry bowl in most reference books and you and I would call it a round serving bowl. It is a good size for salad or a big bowl of sliced berries and melons these hot summer days.

Serving bowls are among the easiest vintage glass pieces to enjoy. They are nicely sized and are big enough to look good on a shelf. Then all you need to do is wash, fill with fruit or salad, to make anything you serve look enticing. Your friends will be intrigued with your dish selection and it will be so pretty and pink!

Don’t you wonder how glass companies came up with the pattern names they used? Some are obvious, like Miss America or Queen Mary. Some match the pattern with the name. Think of Block Optic. Or Adam’s Rib, like this pink candy jar.

Diamond Glass made Adam’s Rib in the late 1920s in a rainbow of colors. I’ve seen (and sold) amber and pink. Today I saw a few pieces of pink at a local antique mall. Diamond made a lovely medium blue and green that so far have not come my way, plus they tried different decorations like metal trims or iridescence.

You can see the pattern is a wide band of narrow ribs. The ribs are rounded and there is a ridge running parallel with the rim. Yes, it’s pretty obvious why this got the name Adam’s Rib!

What would you call this lovely pink depression glass pattern? Hocking Glass named it Old Colony when they made it back in the 1930s. Collectors call it Open Lace or Lace Edge. What would you call it?

I like the design a lot. It is fascinating.

Old Colony Pink Depression Glass Cereal Bowl

Don’t you wonder how this survived 70+ years? Old Colony (or Lace Edge or Open Lace) looks so fragile. But it must be sturdier than it appears since it isn’t all that uncommon nor is it one of the pricey depression glass patterns. That rim is actually fairly thick and there is no sharp rim to catch or get worn from stacking. It’s a good design.

Hocking made Old Colony in pink and clear and possibly a few pieces in green. You might find topaz yellow glass that has the same open rim that came from Lancaster. One of the neat pieces is the goldfish bowl. You kind of have to wonder about that!

Beverly gave us a new direction for this week’s Pink Saturday. In honor of our country’s Independence Day we’re spot lighting blue or red or pink this week. I chose one of my favorite depression glass patterns, Royal Lace in cobalt blue. This pretty plate is sized to go under a sherbet, perfect for this summer weekend.

You can see why this depression pattern is called “Royal Lace“. The pattern is flowere and blossoms in between sweeping molded arches. It looks like lace, don’t you think?

Hazel Atlas made Royal Lace in green, pink and clear besides this glorious blue. The story is that the factory had some blue glass left over after a run of Shirley Temple glasses and used it for Royal Lace. The rest is history. Royal Lace in blue is one of the most sought after depression glass patterns.

If you decide to collect Royal Lace you’ll want to take a good look at that inner rim. Can you see how it has an edge before merging with the center? That inner rim can get nicked so always check it carefully.
