One Fostoria pattern that is consistently overlooked and under appreciated is Coronet. You can see it’s an entrancing pattern because the super simple three wavy lines, elegant turned out feet and graceful shapes. Yet is is one of the less well known designs, both as the undecorated blank and with cut and etched adornments.

Fostoria made Coronet from 1938 to 1959, a long time in glass terms. Fostoria overlapped Baroque and the heavy colonial-styled Raleigh glassware production with Coronet. All three patterns had strong pattern motifs. Besides the three wavy lines that are Coronet signatures handles look like curled up ram’s horns. You cannot miss a Coronet creamer or candle holder with that curl.

One reason Coronet isn’t so well known is Fostoria didn’t use it for many etches or cuttings. (Compare this to Baroque which had many very popular etched patterns.) You will find Willowmere rose etch and Cynthia floral spray cuttings on Coronet; these are among the best known patterns yet neither is as popular as Navarre or Chintz.

Personally I don’t know which is my favorite, Baroque or Coronet. They are both beautiful.

Which do you like better? Leave a comment and tell us.

Shopping Information: We carry Coronet both plain and etched in our stores Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass and Vintage Elegant Depression Glass. It’s like antiquing with your best friend.

Last week I bought a large set of Fostoria Romance etched crystal, mostly stems with a few serving pieces. I like Romance for its graceful pattern of flowers tied in ribbons and bows, the lovely clear crystal and clean lines of the Contour blank.

Fostoria made Romance into the 1960s so it is more available and affordable than the earlier June etch. This is a bonus for sure, especially today when people enjoy having pretty glassware and using something a little unique on their dinner table but don’t want to break the bank buying a set of goblets.

The shallow bowl pictured is called a lily pond. The idea is you could float flowers or put a frog in the center and use for a modern arrangement. Some people did both.

When I first got this bowl my husband – who is not a glass lover – liked it so much he put it on the cupboard to hold fruit. (I store all my inventory for sale wrapped carefully and in boxes so had to retrieve it and replace with a piece of art pottery. ) It looked great with fruit and that’s an easy way to use this shape.

Shopping information: We have this bowl listed in our eBay store Vintage Elegant Depression Glass and our larger store at Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.

Do you know the saying “It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”? It’s a good way to live.

Somehow that is what crossed my mind when I saw this candle holder today. Normally I don’t get too profound with glass – it is after all beautiful memories. But this piece just glows with light and that sweeping curve makes you want to reach for the candles and matches and bring light to gloom days.

This is Fostoria’s Baroque two-light candle holder with the Navarre etch. Baroque candle holders all have some element of this up swept glass and flared curves. Can you imagine how this will look on a dinner table with a flower arrangement? Elegant. Choice. Sparkling with light and life.

Thank you for stopping by. Please leave a comment so I know what you like to see.

If you are reading this on the blog site you may have noticed the blog re-do. (You cannot miss the bright orange and snazzy photo show.) The company that is upgrading this for me submitted their final design last Friday and should complete work this week. It will be an improvement with easier navigation and pull down menus to find posts that interest you. Thank you for your patience.

How do you like this combination of modernistic styled round forms with the delicate floral sprays cutting? This is the Nosegay cutting on Contour blank by Fostoria Glass. No surprise Fostoria made this in the 1950s – that mid century modern style demanded curvy shapes.

I like the Contour shapes. That curved free form looking handle goes perfectly with the heavier sham base. Contour plates are cupped and the bowls curve over and come in neat shapes.

Nosegay must have been somewhat popular since Fostoria made it for nearly 20 years. The understated cutting looks perfect for the 1960s – the era of the little black dress and pearls – but it doesn’t seem to quite go with the 1950s Contour shapes.

I’ve not seen Nosegay stemware in person. It looks more put together in photos than do the accessory pieces like relish trays, the stems curl up a little at the top and look great with the traditional floral sprays.

The creamer and its matching sugar are a good retro combination. You can see them in our eBay store, Catladykates Vintage Elegant Depression Glass and in our larger store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.

I’m not doing a tablescape this week. My blog site is getting remodeled right now and posts are getting a little overwhelmed with the orange background color that my new Wordpress theme uses. I’m getting the color and some layout problems fixed (by someone who knows what they are doing, unlike me) and it should be done in a couple weeks. I’ll go back to the Tablescape Thursdays once the page is presentable.

Bouillon cups aren’t for everyone. On the other hand, the days are long gone when you needed a hired girl in the kitchen, two maids and a cook to have something pretty on your table. Back in the day when in-home help was more common families had special dishes for special foods.

They had cream soup bowls for (guess) cream soup

They had sherbet liners to go under sherbet dishes (a smart idea)

They had rimmed soup bowls for regular soup

And they had bouillon bowls (or cups) for clear soups.

Its easier to have a myriad of dishes if you have lots of room and someone to wash and dry for you, but in fact bouillon cups are useful even for those of us who use the same bowls for soup, cereal and salad.

Bouillon cups are small bowls, larger than a coffee cup, with two handles, made to serve soup. In reality they are cute little pieces that are the perfect size to enjoy ice cream, a small fruit salad, your morning cereal, and yes, soup. They have more looks than plain small bowls and you can get these nifty little liners for them too.

I blogged a while back about our Fostoria Beverly green bouillon bowl which is shaped about the same as this Versailles etched blue bowl and liner, also from Fostoria Glass. I buy bouillon bowls and cream soup bowls when I can. They are not the fastest sellers we have but I think they are fascinating little pieces with style and a lot of history.

You may have noticed I didn’t blog much last week. I hurt my hand about a week ago and was goofing off trying to rest it. It’s better now so look for posts more frequently.

Recognize this pretty etch? It is Meadow Rose from Fostoria, one of the top choices for brides in the 1950s. You may have a few pieces from your family.

This pretty comport is a great way to add vintage charm to your home and it’s small enough – about 4 1/2 inches tall – to fit easily in your living room, dining room, or use to hold scented soaps in the guest bath.

I like comports. They are highly decorative and a great way to show off the etch. I showed a few center handled servers last week that are like glass canvases; comports are similar but smaller and a little friendlier since they can be as unobtrusive on a shelf or table as you need.

This one has the Meadow Rose etch which is all curlicues and swags and the glass stem itself is more curlicues. The rim is scalloped. It might sound delicate or ornate but it isn’t; the design complements the shape just perfectly.

I showed other Meadow Rose pieces in earlier posts, the salad (ok, let’s be honest here, the dessert) plate and the footed tumbler. All the pieces are stunning together but you can mix and match them with china or other glass and set a beautiful table.

Previous post about Meadow Rose dessert plate.

It’s been raining here the past few days so let’s find some sunny colored glass. This June etched server in Fostoria’s sunshine yellow is just the thing. June is a happy fresh pattern, all full of flowers and ribbons and bows, and the topaz yellow color makes you feel like you stepped out into a meadow lavished with sunshine and daisies.

This center handled server is just the piece to show off the pretty design and glowing color. You can see the fleur de lis shaped handle – typical Fostoria – and look closely at the base. See the lighter streaks? This is an optic pattern meaning there is a little more going on with the shape of the glass that makes it look sparkly and even more alive. The streaks are from the light reflecting off different thicknesses in the glass. There really are no streaks at all, it’s all in the light.

I like center handled servers – a lot – and this is one the finest we have. We’ve an amber one same shape without an etched design that is lovely plus a few in green and clear. Center handled servers are perfect to serve dainty sandwiches or cookies or cupcakes but their best point is how they act as a canvas for the rich design and pleasing colors. Come take a look at Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.

This was supposed to be Meadow Rose turn in the Tablescape Thursday sun but I’m not happy with my table setting photos. We can admire my pretty dessert plate today.

Meadow Rose is a joyful pattern – even the name makes you think of soft sunshine on peaceful lawn. Can you see the garland design? It is graceful curlicues and scrolls with fluffy flowers all encircling an open space of crystal. Meadow Rose has a lot of looks but it isn’t one of those patterns that hits you over the head with its style. It quietly waits until you fall for it.

The plate is 7 1/2 inches wide, which Fostoria called their 7 inch lunch plate. You could use it for salad, yes, and salad is a good thing. But wouldn’t this be better with a few brownies or cookies? It’s the perfect size for dessert.

You can see how similar Meadow Rose is to Fostoria’s sister pattern Navarre. Both have scrolls and curlicues and Fostoria etched both on the identical pieces. Navarre has an upside down bouquet where Meadow Rose has the open clear space.

If you would like beautiful Meadow Rose etched plates for your brownies (or salad) please check our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.

This is such a pretty plates, all curlicues and scrolls etched on crystal. The pattern is Meadow Rose from Fostoria Glass and it’s a winner.

I visualize using a set of these for dessert when friends come over to play cards or for crackers and cheese when you enjoy a glass of wine. The plate is a great size for this, about 7 inches across and it’s easy to hold with the rim curving up just enough to give you something to hang on to.

Even if you prefer a more tailored design this will work well for you. The pattern is beautiful and refined, placed perfectly between molded fleur de lis. I took photos today for a tablescape and was delighted with the results. Meadow Rose has just enough frills to be perfect.

This is one of my best pieces of Navarre etched crystal and it’s a treat. The upside down bouquets etched on clear crystal with swags all over look like flowers on ice.

This bowl is sort of octagonal shaped with clear panels between the etched sides and it looks more formal than some of the Navarre etched Baroque pieces. This is a handsome piece that commands attention and it’s big enough to use as a unique serving bowl as well as attracting attention for display.

Last week I posted about the tremendous array of Navarre goblets available. There are not so many choices in large serving bowls – you have five or six to choose among – and this one is the only bowl with the Flame shape. Flame has the raised rayed design and Baroque has the fleur de lis on the side. Flame seems stately, classic, something you would use with the good china and silver while Baroque is livelier and will happily complement your casual dinnerware.
