Poppies were an important motif in the 1920s and into the 1930s. Think of Cambridge Gloria, Hazel Atlas Florentine, Fostoria Rogene. Poppies were a symbol of the first world war because they grew wild all over the Flemish fields that were battlegrounds and cemeteries in the war and were immortalized in poems like In Flanders [...]

A couple days ago I showed off a Balda green console bowl from Central Glass, just a beautiful piece, and mentioned St. Patrick’s Day. Apparently I’m calendar challenged because today is St. Patrick’s Day and time for green glass, green sweaters and yes, green beer for the adventurous. In honor of St Patrick’s Day – [...]

Quiz time! What pattern is this? If you don’t recognize it then don’t feel bad. Fostoria originally called this fresh springtime pattern Italian Lace, then for some reason changed it to Gold Lace the last two years they made it. Regardless which name you use this is not a common pattern. The etch is on [...]

Does this look like fireworks or milkweed puffs? The big poofs look like the 4th of July, so neat. This is Fostoria Lido etched low sherbet in crystal. Our family crystal is Cambridge Rose Point, but Lido is my favorite Fostoria pattern. I like a lot of Fostoria patterns – Trojan, Romance, June, Vesper plus [...]

I’ve read that pizza sales go up 30% on Super Bowl Sunday. So… are you looking for a better way to serve that pizza than in the ugly cardboard box it came in? This center handled server would be a great contrast. This is Fostoria Romance center handled server on the Sonata blank, very pretty [...]

Most of the Fostoria glass we’ve seen here has been etched. Fostoria made many beautiful cuttings as well, including this old Large Star Cut sherry goblet. This is one of the earliest Fostoria cuttings, dating to 1904 to 1927. Fostoria used this on a wide array of pieces, mostly stemware and accessories. We’ve had [...]

Here is a stunning example of etched vintage elegant glass, the Fostoria Romance etched footed pitcher. Fostoria Glass made pitchers in many of their popular etched patterns and this one is a beauty. The footed base, rounded shape and graceful spout are so classy, then add on the wonderful Romance etch to have the complete [...]

One Fostoria pattern that is consistently overlooked and under appreciated is Coronet. You can see it’s an entrancing pattern because the super simple three wavy lines, elegant turned out feet and graceful shapes. Yet is is one of the less well known designs, both as the undecorated blank and with cut and etched adornments. Fostoria [...]

Last week I bought a large set of Fostoria Romance etched crystal, mostly stems with a few serving pieces. I like Romance for its graceful pattern of flowers tied in ribbons and bows, the lovely clear crystal and clean lines of the Contour blank. Fostoria made Romance into the 1960s so it is more available [...]

Do you know the saying “It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”? It’s a good way to live. Somehow that is what crossed my mind when I saw this candle holder today. Normally I don’t get too profound with glass – it is after all beautiful memories. But this piece [...]
