A Wearin’ of the Green – Princess Green Depression Glass Hat Bowl

Princess Green Depression Glass 9 Deep Hat Bowl

Princess Green Depression Glass 9 Deep Hat Bowl

Since St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner so let’s look at a few green items.  This is one of my favorite green depression glass patterns, Princess by Hocking Glass.  I have a large selection in pink but have to admit I prefer green to the pink.  Hocking’s green in this pattern is just a tad lighter color, a little fresher than the usual green.

I like the way the scroll designs on this pattern look like curtains sweeping away on a stage.  It makes me feel like I’m at the theater waiting for the curtain to go up and the play to begin.

Most of the Princess pieces are octagonal, really squares with the corners cut off, and this bowl is round at the top and octagonal at the base.  It is called the 9 inch deep hat-shaped bowl.  It is 9 inches across and almost 4 inches deep and it looks deeper than it is.  A bowl of this style would be great for a pasta salad, especially one with some green peppers or green rotini in it

If you like Princess depression glass be sure to check out our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.  It’s like antiquing with your best friend.

Pink Saturday: Pretty Princess in Pink

Princess Pink Depression Glass Sherbet

Princess Pink Depression Glass Sherbet

Thank you to Beverly from How Sweet the Sound for hosting Pink Saturday.  What a perfect color for cheerful thoughts of spring.

Up today is our Princess.  This is pink depression glass from Hocking, made about 1931 to 1935 when the country was deep in the Great Depression.  Pink glassware – and blue, amber, green and amethyst – was given away as premiums or offered with coupons.  It was a good way for the thrifty housewife to get something beautiful for her family while saving money.

Today we can tell the pieces in patterns that were not popular premiums and those that ladies needed to send in hard-to-find cash to get.  Those are the pieces that are more expensive or harder to find.  Sherbets are fairly common in most depression glass patterns but not so readily available in pink Princess.

Sherbets are fun pieces.  You can use them for a fruit cup, to serve applesauce, yogurt or cottage cheese, fill them with berries, custard and cream, use them for cake with lemon sauce and even use them for sherbet.

Pink isn’t just for Saturday.  And pink depression glass is a fun way to enjoy pink, beautiful glass, and a link to our history.

We have a good selection of pink Princess in our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass and offer coupons to our blog and newsletter subscribers.  Just use coupon news when you check out.

Valentine’s Day Pink Depression Glass – Dogwood Tumbler

Dogwood Pink Depression Glass Tumbler

Dogwood Pink Depression Glass Tumbler

It’s cold outside and spring seems such a long time away.  Let’s cheer ourselves up with a few days of pink.  Pink isn’t just for Valentine’s Day any more.

Today I’m showing off one of our rare pieces of depression glass, the water tumbler in Dogwood depression glass from MacBeth Evans.  Tumblers are always among the more scarce pieces in vintage glassware patterns and Dogwood is no exception.  This one has the design screened on – not flat paint but a raised knobby like decoration.  It’s very pretty and this 12 ounce size is even harder to find than others.

If you like flowers you recognize the four petals as being Dogwood but for some reason this pattern is nicknamed Appleblossom.  Apple blossoms have five petals.  Maybe it’s because the design is just so pretty and feels like spring.

We have a good selection of Dogwood pink depression glass.  I was able to get several pieces from a dealer who was closing down and almost everything is in great shape.  As time passes it’s getting harder to find depression glass in such good shape, so come check us out.

Jeannette Petal Swirl Pink Depression Glass – Easy Collectible for You

Petal Swirl Pink Depression Glass Salad Bowl

Petal Swirl Pink Depression Glass Salad Bowl

Now here is a pink depression glass pattern that is easy on the eyes, easy to collect and easy to enjoy.  The pattern is Swirl, called Petal Swirl by Jeannette Glass.

You can see the swirl design on the sides of the salad bowl and the scalloped rim around the top.  This is one of the pink depression glass patterns you can collect and enjoy every day if you choose.

Jeannette made this only two years, 1937 to 1938, and in a full dinner set with many accessory pieces like a vase, pitcher, butter dish, candle holder and candy dish.  It’s a good pattern that doesn’t have a lot of spots that nick easily; it’s reasonably sturdy.  Yet for some reason it is not terribly expensive.  People like it; they don’t pursue it as much as you would think.  For example the 9 inch salad bowl is under $30, certainly among the most affordable patterns.

Besides pink Jeannette made this in ultra marine teal and solid blue delphite.  The teal is really pretty too.

We have a good set of the pink so please check us out!

Is Depression Glass On Trend for Weddings?

Mayfair Open Rose Pink Depression Glass Pitcher

Mayfair Open Rose Pink Depression Glass Pitcher

Is depression glass the new trend for weddings?  Ami Elizabeth noted this trend in her blog post – that depression glass is perfect fit for our renewed desires for things that last and things with meaning.

Depression glass – especially glass that has been used and enjoyed – is an intimate link to the past.  And I believe it is a promise for the future.  What better gift for newlyweds than 80 year old glass given with the prayer that their marriage will endure as long?

I’m showing off our Mayfair pink pitcher – it’s in great condition and is authentic depression glass – which would be a fine gift for a bride’s shower or wedding gift to the happy couple.

If you have friends or family getting married this summer stay tuned every Sunday as we will suggest perfect glass to build memories in our on-going wedding gift guide.

Pretzel Depression Glass Indiana Line 622 – 1940s Glassware

Depression Glass 0 Comment »
Indiana Glass Pretzel Crystal Glassware 8 Inch Lunch Plate

Indiana Glass Pretzel Clear Depression Glassware 8 Inch Lunch Plate

Here’s another of the more obscure depression glass patterns that actually dates to the 1940s from Indiana Glass.  Collectors call this Pretzel – great descriptive name – and Indiana called it number 622.

This is an interesting pattern that had some neat pieces.  The cups, creamers and sugars have handles that look like one of the pretzel shapes came out and curled around.  There’s a small olive dish that looks like a leaf.  Plus there is a snack set.    These are the pieces that are typical of the glassware from the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

I’ve seen pictures of Pretzel glass with decorated centers but have not seen them in person.  Indiana made Pretzel in clear early in the 1940s and added amber and eventually an avocado green.   They made just a few pieces, basic tableware, in amber and green.

An avid depression glass collector friend uses Pretzel for her daily dishes and they look sharp.  I was surprised how good they looked and of course Pretzel certainly is not going to be just like everyone else’s dinner set.

So what’s good about Pretzel?  It’s attractive; there are a lot of neat pieces in clear; it’s affordable.   (Plates like these are $5 to $15 each.)  On the downside you won’t find it offered as often as some patterns and you won’t find it in pink, depression green or blue.  If you like the snazzy geometric design and prefer glass you can use without worrying about it being irreplaceable then consider Pretzel.

How to Get Glass Identification Help

Monongah Glass Secretaries Primrose Flower Etched Water Goblet

Monongah Glass Secretaries Primrose Flower Etched Water Goblet

It can be tough figuring out what you have.  If you have mystery glass and you want to sell it, where do you go.  If you have a few pieces and want more, how do you find them.  Let me give you a few tips.

There are lots of good reference books and your library will likely have a couple.  The basic depression glass books by Gene Florence or Barbara Mauzy are excellent to help you figure out what pattern  you have.  If you have etched glass it might be a little harder since there were many etched patterns and you probably don’t want to spend a fortune buying glass books that cover every maker.  There are good general books by Gene Florence and Coe and Coe that are good starting points.

You can search on eBay.  Try to narrow  your search by deciding what category your glass probably fits into.  Is the bottom rim ground smooth?  Then it’s probably Elegant glass.

Another good site is the Glass Etch and Pattern Gallery.  You can search by design motif.  I used to use Replacements website but they changed it now so you get pictures of individual pieces which makes it too time consuming to search.

You can ask someone whom you think might know.  You can ask me.  I can identify many depression and elegant patterns – but I have no expertise in European glass, carnival glass, recent glass – and  you are welcome to ask.  I’ve changed my method for requests and ask that you abide by this.  Here’s what you can do to ask for my help:

  1. Go to my Catladykate’s Elegant and Depression Glass page on Facebook.  The URL is www.DepressionGlassFun.com.
  2. Click Photos.
  3. Click Create a Photo Album
  4. Add your photos and a brief description of the glass and why you are interested.
  5. Drop me a note to Kathy@catladykate.com and ask for help.

Your photos will be there for all the fans and community to see.  That’s going to give you  a better chance of someone recognizing your glass for you.

Please don’t send photos to my email.  I use a webmail viewer and the inbox cannot handle the large file size photos.

I ask that you honor this request and in return I will do what I can to help you.

And the goblet featured?  This is Secretaries Primrose by Monogah Glass.  I show it because Replacements kindly identified it for me.

Pattern Guide: Doric and Pansy Depression Glass by Jeannette

Depression Glass 0 Comment »
Doric & Pansy Teal Depression Glass Salad Plate

Doric & Pansy Teal Depression Glass Salad Plate

Jeannette made Doric and Pansy for just a couple years, 1937 to 1938, and in ultra marine or teal, pink and some crystal.  From what I've read, they made more pieces in teal than pink which is unusual compared to other depression patterns.  Jeannette's teal or ultramarine is a rich blue green color that can have a little more blue or green from piece to piece.  It is very pretty.

Doric and Pansy has squares with pansy flowers in them that alternate with squares that have a simple geometric motif. The geometric motif is the "Doric" part of the name. It is a pretty pattern but not extensive. There are enough pieces for a small dinner set that includes a few serving pieces, tumblers, three sizes of plates, bowls, cups and saucers. It is a nice size set that you can use and enjoy.

I've not had a problem with chipping particularly with this, certainly less than with the similar Doric pattern.  The glass is thin with the design on the outside, or bottom in the case of plates, and you don't notice wear on a busy pattern like this, so even a plate with a few utensil marks will look sharp.  The only place that tends to nick is a ridge on the handles of cups or sugar bowls.  Jeannette made this same shape handle in Adam depression glass and it gets nicks easily.

Jeannette made Doric and Pansy in a small children's set for toy glass dishes. These are called Pretty Polly which is a good name since they are very pretty. They are also rather expensive, but in line with other depression toy glassware. We have the Pretty Polly pink cups and saucers listed.

Beautiful Green Depression Glass – Featuring Georgian Lovebirds

Federal Georgian Lovebirds Green Depression Glass Big Creamer

Federal Georgian Lovebirds Green Depression Glass Big Creamer

Depression glass is colored glass, right?  Yes, well mostly.  As we talked about recently clear depression glass has its own charms.  Clear glass aside, when we think depression glass we think colors.  And green is right up there.  I did some quick checking and 21 of the first 25 patterns I checked came in green.

The creamer on the left is Georgian by Federal Glass, also called Lovebirds.  This particular pattern has mold-etched birds and baskets and was made in green with just a bit of amber and clear production.  It is slightly more green in person than in the photo.  (Green is hard to get just right.)

Most green depression glass is crayon green.  Think back to your trusty box of crayons and the green you used for grass.  That’s green.  You will find paler and darker colors, but the green is almost always grass green.

Fenton and New Martinsville made a luscious jade green and US Glass’ green has a tinge of blueish aqua, but the vast majority is plain green.  Olive green or avocado green are later, usually 1960s-early 80s, when the darker tones were in vogue.  (Not all colored glass is depression glass!)

So, what to look for in green glass?  Personally I like the Georgian pattern shown and Patrician Spoke from Federal, Cameo from Hocking, Cherry Blossom from Jeannette and Florentine Poppy from Hazel Atlas.  Any of these would be a great pattern to collect, or consider Block Optic as a good pattern that’s available and fun, especially in green where there are so many pieces to pursue.

Green isn’t just for St Patrick’s or Christmas.  It is a cheerful color and the depression green glass blends well and plays nicely with other dishes and colored glass.

Help Name Me! Pink Depression Glass

Really Nice 3-Toed Pink Depression Glass Bowl

Really Nice 3-Toed Pink Depression Glass Bowl

Isn’t this a neat piece of pink depression glass?  Unfortunately I’ve no idea what it is or who made it.  It’s similar to a Hocking pattern, which Replacements lists as AHC37, but that design does not have the interesting zig zags on the bottom.

It’s about 7 inches wide and stands on three small feet and has a wavy rim, very nice piece.  It appears to have been mass-produced since the seams are raised slightly, thus I’ve put it under depression glass in my stores.

I got this from a guy at the local flea market who saves me his glass; as he says, “I’ll pay him a fair price”.  I did for this piece and won’t be able to sell it for much above what I paid, but it’s only fair to buy from someone who saves things for me.  My hope is to win some and come out even on the rest.
